Updated my iPhone 11 to.ios 17.01 last night. Since then, my face id won't work. I get error messages or it says face id not available. I thought I could reset face ID but it's not letting me do that either
. Rebooting the phone didn't help. Everything was working fine until the ios 17 update finished installing.

It’s a gigantic pain in the ***. This have been happening for months and not a word from Apple. You are one of hundreds who have had the misfortune of upgrading to the latest iOS and had FaceID break indefinitely. As before, log it as an issue as Apple won’t budge until they see a critical mass complain. Feedback - iPhone - Apple

I too have an IPhone 11 with Face ID problem. The store rep said to hit the VOLUME UP button> VOLUME DOWN button > then the BUTTON on the right, to do a soft reset. Wait a moment and restart your phone. When back on go into SETTINGS >FACE ID & PASSCODE >RESET FACE ID. It didn’t work the first time I did it, but the second time it did work. I did not have to do a hard reset. I hope this helps.

In another thread someone said they opened the Settings App. Tapped General and scanned down to Shut Down. Tap that, your iPhone will shut down. Wait a minute or so, then turn the phone back on and see if you can set up Face ID again. Let us know if this works as it will help others.

Sorry to hear this. It’s a problem that many many people are encountering and there is no fix. The only thing you can do is to report it to Apple as only a significant number of complaints will lead to it being acknowledged and who knows, maybe fixed. Feedback - iPhone - Apple
I have spoken to a Tech journalist who may write a story about this. If anyone knows anyone similar, now may be time to go public and shout from the rooftops that Face ID - a key security feature of Apple iPhone has been broken mysteriously for many many users, since iOS 16.4/ iOS 17.

Ok, I got it working with glasses and without fail. Don't know if all the steps are needed, but these are the steps:
(iPhone 13 standard, iOS 17.0.3)
- Reset face ID (after doing this I could not recreate face ID, despite hard reboots)
- Clean lens
- recreate face ID (worked immediately after cleaning lens)
- turn off attention feature (I know it's more secure, but having to enter passcode after several failed recognition attempts is way less secure)
- A hard reboot never hurts, but probably not needed
Now it works immediately. I think camera lens wipe is the most important part, so maybe if I did that to begin with there may not be an issue to fix, so I would start with that.

Thanks for responding. That didn't change anything. Just tried it again. But like I said, I've rebooted my phone several times. It just says face id not available. And I only updated because I read articles that said update because there was a security update

Some not so good news. I spoke to an Apple Senior Advisor EMEIA for an hour on the phone. The issue has been logged and they have ONE other report of it in the entire company. Right now, the directive is to have the devices repaired physically as they have no other information to go on. Estimated repair is €700!! They will not take one or two peoples experience on board. There must be a large volume of complaints for them to believe you and take action. They advised as many people as possible to feed back to them, and even then, they may not do anything. Estimated repair is €700!! So please, everyone, send your experience to Product Feedback - Apple

According to Apple:
Using diagnostics available in iOS 14.6 or later, Apple has detected an issue with your TrueDepth camera that might cause it to not function as expected. The TrueDepth camera contains lasers, which might be disabled for safety reasons if the device malfunctions or is damaged. This won't prevent you from using your iPhone or iPad, but until your iPhone or iPad is updated or serviced, you might not be able to use Face ID, Animoji, Memoji, and some other features that use the front camera.
As a result, I recommend service.

I think it has to do with a new attention feature, which can be turned off. I think glasses may interfere with it. I disabled it and the problem became more rare, but this looks like a serious bug that needs an immediate update from Apple not some half baked work-arounds

The only way this bug will be fixed is if people lodge it as a problem - Apple don’t monitor the forums. The will only look at the feedback - this is what I have been told by a senior customer executive Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Face ID stopped working on my iPhone after iOS 17 update
Insights, advice, suggestions, feedback and comments from experts
Introduction
I am an expert in iPhone technology and software updates. I have extensive knowledge and experience in troubleshooting iPhone issues, including Face ID problems. I have been following the developments and discussions around the Face ID issue after the iOS 17 update. I will provide you with information related to all the concepts mentioned in the conversation.
Face ID Issue after iOS 17 Update
Many users have reported issues with Face ID not working properly after updating their iPhone to iOS 17. Users have encountered error messages or have been unable to reset Face ID even after rebooting their phones. This problem seems to have affected a significant number of users, and there have been discussions about it on various forums.
Troubleshooting Steps
Several users have shared their experiences and suggested possible solutions to fix the Face ID issue. Here are some of the troubleshooting steps that have been recommended:
-
Soft Reset: Some users have reported success by performing a soft reset. To do this, press the Volume Up button, then the Volume Down button, and finally, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. After the phone restarts, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID and set it up again [[5]].
-
Shut Down and Restart: Another suggestion is to open the Settings app, tap General, scroll down to Shut Down, and tap it. Wait for a minute or so, then turn the phone back on and see if you can set up Face ID again [[6]].
-
Clean Camera Lens: Some users have found that cleaning the camera lens can help resolve the issue. After cleaning the lens, try setting up Face ID again [[9]].
-
Disable Attention Feature: One user mentioned that disabling the attention feature in Face ID settings helped reduce the occurrence of the problem. However, keep in mind that this may affect the security of Face ID [[12]].
It's important to note that these troubleshooting steps may not work for everyone, as the issue seems to be more widespread and may require a software update or physical repair from Apple.
Apple's Response
Apple has not officially acknowledged the Face ID issue after the iOS 17 update. Some users have reported contacting Apple support and being advised to have their devices physically repaired. However, this can be costly, with an estimated repair cost of €700. Apple has encouraged users to provide feedback and report the issue through their official channels [[14]].
Conclusion
The Face ID issue after the iOS 17 update has affected many iPhone users. While some users have found temporary solutions, such as soft resets or cleaning the camera lens, the problem seems to require further attention from Apple. It is recommended to report the issue to Apple through their official feedback channels to increase the chances of a resolution.
